How To Make Herbal Smoking Blends

There are many different methods for making herbal smoke blends. The easiest way is to mix dry herbs together to create a balanced smokeing blend. Your herbal smoking blend should consist of three parts. You base herbs, your modifier herbs, and your flavor herbs. Make sure you mix herbs that compliment each other. If you are after a lucid dream blend, or something relaxing, be sure to not use herbs that are over stimulating. If you are looking for a day time blend, don't use herbs that encourage the mid-day nap!

Base Herbs

Your base herb, or herbs should be something that is smooth, has body, and burns well. To keep things simple I am only going to cover a few of my favorite base herbs.

-Damiana (Turnera diffusa):

Damiana leaves have been used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency by the native peoples of Mexico, including the Mayan Indians and is used for both male and female sexual stimulation, increased energy, asthma, depression, impotence and menstrual problems.

Damiana is one of my favorite base herbs. It has a very unique flavor, strong relaxing effect, burns well, tastes great, and is easy to roll. If you are looking to make a smoke blend that gives a calming, creative, uplifting effect, I would suggest Damiana as your base herb.

-Mullein (Verbascum thapsus):

Mullein is a respiratory medicine and so smoking the dried leaves is one way to bring that medicine directly into the lungs. You could also more recreationally use it as a soft, cooling, airy base for herbal smoking mixtures.

Mullein has a lot of body and burns well, but has no relaxing effect. This is good choice if you’re looking for a day time blend. I like to combine it with Damiana, and/or Raspberry Leaf for a nice base.

-Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus):

Raspberry leaf has been used for centuries as a folk medicine to treat canker sores, cold sores, and gingivitis in persons of all ages and anemia, leg cramps, diarrhea, and morning sickness in pregnant women, and as a uterine relaxant.

Raspberry leaf has a nice fluffy base for a day time smoking blend. I suggest blending Raspberry and Mullein together for a nice base.

Modifier Herbs

Your modifier herb, or herbs will enhance the effect of your base. So, depending on your desired effect, choose 1-4 modifiers to add to your base. Be creative! There are many different types of modifire herbs that can be used, but again to keep things simple I will only be covering a few of my favorites.

-Blue Lotus (Nymphaea Caerulea):

Blue Lotus is also known as Blue Water Lily and the Sacred Lily of the Nile. Blue Lotus is a natural sedative, originating from along the Nile River, in Egypt. For thousands of years it was used by the native people as part of religious ceremonies in which they would use these sacred blue flowers to reach higher levels of consciousness.

Blue Lotus makes a great modifier herb. It will create calming euphoric feelings of peace.

-California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica):

California Poppy is also known as Golden Poppy, copa de oro, and Khishkhash Kalifornia. Native Americans used California Poppy to treat headaches, anxiety, insomnia, as a topical analgesic, and to relieve tooth pain. In fact, California Poppy is considered a sub-opiate, as it is a milder version of the red poppy from which we get opium.

California Poppy also makes a great modifier herb. Whether to relieve pain or simply for recreational use, the California Poppy's mild euphoric effect can provide a legal, enjoyable, sense of euphoria.

-Mugwort (Artemesia vulgaris):

Mugwort is also known as Sailor's Tobacco, Felon Herb, Naughty Man, Chrysanthemum Weed, Old Uncle Henry, and Wild Wormwood. Centuries ago, this herb was used in herbal medicine, food, and as a smoking herb. Mugwort also has hallucinogenic properties. This psychoactive herb is used by some people as a dream enhancer. This mild hallucinogen can be brewed or smoked. Since Mugwort is a mild hallucinogen, it does not cause any harmful side effects.

Mugwort is another great modifier herb. Especially if you are after a lucid dream blend, or something very relaxing.

-Wild Dagga (Leonotis leonurus):

Wild Dagga is also known as Lion's Tail, and is commonly referred to as 'Wild Cannabis'. This is because Wild Dagga has very similar effects to those experienced when using Cannabis.

Wild Dagga is one of my favorite modifier herbs. If you are looking for mood enhancement, slight giddiness, increased colour perception, and mental clarity than this herb is for you!

Some other examples of Modifier Herbs:

Catnip, Chamomile, Coltsfoot, Hops, Lobelia, Marigold, Marshmallow, Marjoram, Rose, Passionflower, Skullcap, Stevia, Thyme, Uva Ursi, and Wild Lettuce.

Flavor Herbs

Flavor Herbs are not a necessity when making herbal smoking blends, but adding flavor to your blend will not only make it taste good, it will also seperate your blend from all others.

Some examples of Flavor Herbs:

Clove (crushed or ground), Lavender, Licorice Root (crushed or ground), Peppermint, Sage, Spearmint, Stevia, and Thyme.

Putting it all together!

As I said earlier there are many different methods for making herbal smoke blends. The way I am going to explain is how I like to make my herbal smoking blends. For this example we are going to make a relaxing smoking blend. Lets get started.

Materials Needed:

Your Herbs (Damiana, Blue Lotus, California Poppy, Mugwort, Wild Dagga, and Lavender), large mixing bowl, mixing spoon (optional), and a working area (kitchen table).

Mixing Ratio:

For this blend we will be using a ratio like this.

-3 parts Base Herbs

-2 parts Modifier Herbs

-1 part Flavor Herbs

First take all your dried herbs (make sure to pick out any stems).

Your Base Herb is Damiana. Place 3 handfuls of Damiana in a large mixing bowl.

Your Modifier Herbs are Blue Lotus, California Poppy, Mugwort, and Wild Dagga. Mix these together first in equal parts, then place 2 handfuls of your Modifier Herbs in the large mixing bowl.

Your Flavor Herb is Lavender. Take 1 handful of Lavender, and place it in the large mixing bowl.

Mix it all together, and you’re done!

Now for the fun part!

Put a nice pinch of your herbal smoke blend in a rolling paper, pipe, or vaporizer, and enjoy!
